Non dairy spreads

Vitalite dairy-free spread 500g

no stars

A vegan spread with twenty-one percent sunflower oil and fortified with vitamins. This smells strongly like old-fashioned margarine and tastes worse. After a taste test, I confined the whole tub to the dustbin. I contacted the company who insisted there must have been something wrong with that tub. I have checked several others from different batches and they are all the same. It is the cheapest brand at one gbp or less per tub but it still needs to be edible. No stars

Pure sunflower spread 500g

four stars

A vegan spread with thirty-five percent sunflower oil and fortified with vitamins. Almost odourless and with a mild flavour, this is perfect for use on bread and crackers but also suitable for cooking purposes. This has been my favourite for some years

Pure olive spread 500g

two stars

A vegan spread without even a slight hint of the sixteen percent olive oil in the flavour, just old-style margarine. A great pity as I love the taste of olive oil. It is fortified with vitamins. This is not as bad as Vitalite but not as good as the Pure sunflower spread

Pure soya spread 500g

three stars

A vegan spread with forty-two percent soya oil and fortified with vitamins which is a slight improvement in taste on the olive version but still not as good as the Pure sunflower spread. Too much of that old margarine flavour for me

Flora freedom spread 500g

three stars

I bought this vegan spread as it is the only one I have found which is made from rapeseed oil. Worryingly, the manufacturer does not know how much of this it contains, merely stating it is sixty percent rapeseed and palm oil in varying proportions so one must assume the taste varies accordingly. It is fortified with vitamins but sadly smells quite strongly of old-style margarine. The taste is not as bad as that implies so it will be eaten but as it is not available locally, I am unlikely to buy it again
