Saclà Free From Bolognese Pasta Sauce

five stars

A clearly labelled vegan Bolognese sauce from Italy in a medium sized jar containing three servings with only good ingredients including red wine and Italian tomatoes. With some soya mince (or similar) and some equally fine Italian maccheroni, a traditionally favourite dish is available for every vegan (and vegetarian) to enjoy without the effort of learning to cook. This is the best I have ever tasted and as of April, 2017, I cannot find anywhere to buy it other than online in large quantities from the Saclà shop

Saclà Intenso vine ripened tomato and olive

five stars

An Italian pasta sauce in a sensible size jar. Only a little is needed and a jar contains four individual servings. Pasta sauce is meant to give a light coating to the pasta, not act as tomato gravy, and the large jars of lesser sauce are pointless unless making twenty or thirty meals. This sauce has a delicious flavour with slices of black and green olives to add pleasure. It is vegan so contains no cheese. I use this with my favourite pasta form, maccheroni

Saclà Intenso flame roasted pepper and tomato

five stars

Another Italian pasta sauce in a sensible size jar. As above, there is enough for four individual servings to give a light coating to the pasta. This sauce has a delicious flavour with pieces of roasted red and yellow peppers. It is vegan so contains no cheese. I also use this with my favourite pasta form

Saclà Intenso sun dried tomato and garlic

four stars

An Italian pasta sauce in a sensible size jar. As above, there is enough for four individual servings to give a light coating to the pasta. This sauce has a perfectly pleasant flavour and with three percent garlic, the only disappointing thing is that I can detect neither smell nor taste of it when preparing the food or eating it. Like the others, it is vegan so contains no cheese

Batts brown sauce (Lidl)

five stars

It is quite unusual (here) to find a brown sauce which is labelled as vegan even thought the ingredients lists on some imply that they are. This brand is remarkably inexpensive and tastes much nicer than my once lifetime favourite brown sauce. It has a fine, rich flavour and a good blend of spices with a small amount of chilli to add a little bite but not enough to be annoying. My new favourite

Batts Ploughman's Plum Chutney (Lidl)

three stars

Chutney tends most often to be little more than an ordinary fruit jam with added vinegar and sometimes a little spice. Nonetheless, some are more enjoyable than others and this plum version is pleasant to eat and very sweet. It works as a dip for some snack-type foods

Batts Caramelised Onion Chutney (Lidl)

three stars

The main ingredient in this chutney is sugar so think onion jam with some added vinegar and a little spice. This onion preserve is pleasant to eat and inevitably very sweet. There are few foods in a vegan diet which are improved by the addition of chutney but there are some
