Burgers

Linda McCartney vegetarian quarter pounders

no stars

This product is vegan but it gets no stars from me. When cooked as directed or gently fried in a pan, these burgers ooze a dark liquid, probably barley malt in water, which immediately sticks to the pan and burns producing a burger which tastes a bit like cremated toffee. The soya protein is tough, lumpy and unpleasant to chew. All things considered, they are disgusting and unlike any other Linda McCartney branded products which tend to be very enjoyable

Linda McCartney vegetarian burgers

four stars

This product is vegan and very different for the larger version reviewed above. Gently fried in a pan with a little olive oil, these burgers become soft and succulent rather than hard and chewy. The taste is quite different from those products above and below not no less pleasant and the texture, as noted, is softer than many and perhaps the best of the bunch. As a bonus, the salt content is lower than many

Asda vegetarian burgers

three stars

These burgers are not vegan but my partner eats them. They too ooze a dark liquid while cooking but it does not burn or adversely affect the flavour. I have it on good authority that they are succulent and tasty without being too salty. They contain egg white

Morrisons meat free burgers

four stars

These burgers are vegan and do not ooze anything at all while cooking. They are succulent, tasty and surprisingly not at all salty. These are the only enjoyable vegan burgers I can buy locally as a rule. I usually eat one per week in a crusty bread roll. I have no idea how these taste in comparison with an animal-based burger as I would not eat those even if I were not vegan

Sainsbury's meat free burgers

three stars

These vegan burgers are larger than most yet lower in calories and frying them produces an explanation: they contain more water. They do not ooze while cooking however and the result is a softer burger than might otherwise be the case. They are pleasant enough to eat. These vegan burgers are not available locally but having them delivered has recently become possible so I decided to try them. I will probably not buy them again as the Morrisons burgers are rather better
